Estonia at Bologna Children´s Book Fair
The Estonian Children’s Literature Centre is a vital institution for subject-based information in the field of children’s literature. Its history dates back to 1933, though today’s centre was established on December 1st, 1997 as the legal successor of the Estonian Children’s Library. The centre celebrated its 90th anniversary in 2023.

The centre collects and preserves Estonian children’s literature and offers engagement opportunities for all enthusiasts as part of Estonia’s cultural heritage. Its mission is to support a variety of initiatives, including research, education, and entertainment.
Through our lovely and creative building and the activities organised there, we convey to visitors the story of Estonian children’s books from past to present, guide children towards reading, and foster an appreciation of literature and books.
About the Function of the Centre
The Estonian Children’s Literature Centre is a passionate advocate for children’s literature on both the local and global stages. Through the promotion of literary projects, illustration exhibitions, and active participation in international book fairs, the centre showcases the richness of Estonian children’s literature worldwide. In doing so, it not only uplifts the works of children’s writers, illustrators, and publishers but also acknowledges the crucial role of researchers, teachers, and librarians in fostering a love for literature among young readers.
The centre promotes children’s literature at home and abroad, initiates literary projects and events, organizes illustration exhibitions (the largest being the Tallinn Illustrations Triennial, which is held triannually), and participates in large-scale literary events and international book fairs (Bologna, Frankfurt, London, etc). It also encourages and commends creators and mediators of children’s literature: children’s writers, illustrators, translators, publishers, researchers, teachers, and librarians. In 2023, the Estonian Children’s Literature Centre, in collaboration with the Narva Art Residency, launched a children’s literature residency with the aim of enriching our children’s literature. The centre furthermore helps to coordinate and support their cooperation. It stands as a unifying force, encouraging collaboration and providing support for diverse contributors who bring the magic of children’s literature to life.

In summary, the Estonian Children’s Literature Centre is not just a building – it’s a living, breathing celebration of stories. It’s a place where literature comes to life and every page transforms into a world of imagination and wonder. Whether you’re a curious child, a teenager exploring new worlds, a parent sharing stories with your little ones, or a literature enthusiast of any age, the centre invites you to embark on a literary journey that transcends time and captivates hearts.
